The Fayetteville High School Student Council will hold its 25th annual Homeless Vigil on Thursday, December 8, from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Friday morning on the north side of the FHS campus along Bulldog Blvd between Phases 2 and 3. The students will stay in temporary shelters overnight to demonstrate and experience what some families in our district face every day.
The students will be accepting monetary donations (cash and check) and non-perishable food items, as well as selling Fayetteville High School sweatshirts and hoodies from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Each sweatshirt will be $20 and each hoodie will be $25, and 100% of the proceeds go to the Families in Transition program.
The annual Homeless Vigil has helped raise awareness and nearly $161,000 in donations to help reduce homelessness in our school district. All donations are given to Fayetteville Public School’s Families in Transition program, which aids students and families in our district that qualify through the McKinney Vento Homelessness Assistance Act. Families in Transition provides housing, enrollment, transportation, and community resources to these student families that may be living in cars, motels, campgrounds, parks, public spaces, emergency or transitional shelters, or other nonpermanent housing. The goal for the 2022 Homeless Vigil is to raise $20,000.
Donations to the vigil can be made online at this link. Please mail donation checks to Fayetteville High School, ATTN: Michelle Fyfe, FHS Student Council. The mailing address is 994 W. Martin Luther King Blvd. Fayetteville, AR 72701.
The Student Council will also have a fundraising event, “Chopped for Charity”, on Friday, December 9 where students have volunteered to shave their head, get a mohawk, or get a mullet haircut during the pep rally if $250 or more is raised in their name. To donate to a student’s total by check, write their name and “Chopped for Charity” in the memo line and mail it to Fayetteville High School at the address above.
